ABOUT ME
Nancy S. Farr

It was having a sweet home birth back in 1982 that the dream of becoming a midwife was planted in my heart. I had previously earned a degree in Early Childhood Education and I often joke "I didn't know how early I wanted to be involved."
As a long standing , community midwife I am also the mother of three grown children and "Nanny" to seven grandchildren. My own experiences of pregnancy, birth and mothering have shaped my philosophy while providing a vivid link to the sacred and profound effects of birth.
Following my home birth, I began an intense 3 year home study program which quenched my thirst until I could enter into active apprenticeship. After apprenticing with local midwives for 3 and 1/2 years I began my solo practice in March of 1988. At the time, I was referred to as a "Lay midwife," "direct-entry," "independent," and "traditional" midwife. I am still all of those things today! Eventually the North American Registry of Midwives was formed (aka NARM). In 1994 I sat for the examination which measured competency in entry level midwifery. By 1997 I took the necessary steps to be credentialed as a CPM. I have found this to be another level of accountability.
To date I have attended over 1,000 deliveries. YOU deliver. We often catch but many times the babies are caught by the parents. My experience includes many births with variations and common problems but also some very rare complications of mother and/or baby. Truth be told, the vast majority of home births are beautiful and healthy.
Over the years I have mentored students from Seattle Midwifery School, Midwives College of Utah, The National Midwifery Institute and the North American Registry of Midwives.
Aside from my passion and commitment to midwifery, I love spending time with family and friends, music, herbal healing, gardening, and just being in nature, especially by the ocean. In the past few years when I'm "off call" you can find me up in Maine renovating an old farmhouse. I currently reside in Manchester, CT.
I value the strong connection with women, nature and the primal function of a woman's body. It is my hope that the women I serve will view me as a trusted friend by the time the baby is born. It is often said "midwives become temporary members of the family."
It is always an honor to be considered for your care.
Let my decades of experience attending home births help support and guide you as you bring your baby earth-side.
